Adolph Gottlieb Lithograph

Signed Adolph Gottlieb 1969; # 32 of 75. 30 X 22
Lithograph ADOLPH GOTTLIEB
AMERICAN (1903-1974)

Gottlieb exhibited a propensity for art at a young age, dropping out of high school and working his passage to Paris where he took classes at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere and visited the Louvre daily. Upon his return to NY, he continued his art education and as his career grew, formed lasting friendships with such artists at Mark Rothko and Milton Avery. He would go on to become extremely influential in the art world with exhibitions at the Guggenheim and Whitney Museums among others. His series entitled “The Bursts”, of which this is one, were begun in 1957. This work simplifies the suggestion of landscapes down to discs and winding masses. Gottlieb is known as the first color field painter and the forerunner of lyrical abstraction. He continued to work on “The Bursts” series until his death.

GUY CARLETON WIGGINS
AMERICAN (1883-1962)
Oil on Board 15.5 X 11.5
New England Fall Scene

Wiggins became famous for his painting of New York City’s snowy streets, landmarks and towering skyscrapers during the winter. Born in Brooklyn, NY, his early training was given by his father, an accomplished artist in his own right. He later enrolled in the National Academy of Design to study painting under William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri. Throughout his career, Wiggins painted in an impressionistic style, as may be seen in his paintings of New England streams, fields and woodlands, capturing the various seasons of the year.
He became one of the youngest members of the Lyme Art Colony of Old Lyme, CT. He enjoyed a long and successful career as a painter and died in St. Augustine, FL. In 1962. His work can be seen in collections as the Metropolitan Art Museum, the National Gallery, and the Richmond Art Museum, Indiana.
